The Breda project explored how cities can redefine prosperity beyond economic growth - towards a future where well-being, inclusion, and sustainability coexist.
Â
Developed with an international team of young professionals and design students under the guidance of Professor Igor Mayer, it used serious gaming and speculative design as tools to imagine future-proof urban systems.
Â
The project questioned how diverse communities, including migrants and asylum seekers, could take an active role in shaping these futures, recognising their contribution as essential to the sustainable and social growth of the city.
The project embraces the UN Sustainable Development Goals by reimagining prosperity beyond economic growth, using serious gaming and speculative design to foster inclusion and long-term thinking. As cities evolve, it highlights that sustainable futures must include everyone — from local residents to migrants and asylum seekers — as active contributors to social and urban transformation.
CONCEPT ESSENTIALS
VISION
The project envisions a system where prosperity is understood as interconnected - social, cultural, and environmental well-being growing together through collaboration and shared responsibility.
HOW (LONG FUTURE PROOF APPROACH)
By creating a safe space to simulate the policy decision making process in a risk-free environment.

AI - image generation concept
Â
Prompt style: Fluid motion, poetic realism, ethereal colours, Dutch autumn light, painterly lens flare, participatory futures aesthetic.
HOW WE IMAGINE IT
MAIN TARGET AUDIENCE
Individuals in positions of civic influence - policymakers, council members, and professionals working in organisations that shape short- to medium-term decisions within the community. These are people operating within circles of power who can directly impact how local futures are imagined and implemented.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES
As in LEGO® Serious Play and other initiatives that transform playful methods into systems of change, turning what once seemed childlike into tools for reflection was an integral, almost inevitable requirement for this project. A serious yet playful game concept became an essential component of the design approach, shaped under the mentorship of Professor Igor Mayer, whose expertise in Playful Organisations and Learning Systems deeply influenced our process.
Â
It allowed complex ideas of prosperity to become tangible - a living model where collaboration, strategy, and emotion met, helping participants test decisions, reveal connections, and imagine future possibilities together.

Game presentation - Breda - The Netherlands - 2024
The game simulates how a city strives to achieve Broad Prosperity through collaboration. Each participant takes on a civic or social role and must work with others to balance STEEP goals ( social- technological - environmental - economical and political).
Â
The challenge lies in navigating competing priorities while discovering that true prosperity depends on collective action rather than individual success.

HOW WE IMAGINE IT

LESSONS
STRATEGY THROUGH PLAY
Serious gaming can turn abstract strategies into lived experiences, helping participants see the impact of their decisions in real time.
FUTURE ORIENTATION
The speculative setup allowed players to explore long-term thinking and test alternative futures without real-world risk.
EDUCATION ENHANCED
Breda University amplifies what design culture is becoming in the Netherlands - bold, experimental, and socially grounded. It’s no coincidence that the “Dutch approach” to a sustainable, future-proof reality thrives here; this experiment is living proof of that spirit. What makes it powerful is how enhance the academic distance and brings theory into practice, holistic, diverse, and deeply connected to real life.
Â
Linking academia with the real change makers in local communities is not just admirable, it’s necessary. Many institutions claim to do this, but often end up trapped in abstraction and comfort. Breda, at least for a moment, breaks that illusion.
DESIGN IN TRANSLATION
The process showed how strategic design can make complex policy goals tangible, participatory, and emotionally engaging.
